It’s that time of the year again in Buffalo. Sure, players just put the pads on out in Pittsford for Training Camp, but we aren’t talking about the players on the field… We’re Bills’ fans! The season of the armchair QB has commenced! Here in Buffalo, we have a solid Armchair QB/Armchair Coach/Armchair media relationship. After another WNY hibernation, we can finally get back into what it really means to be a Bills Fan. Complaining, collectively.

We no longer have to stand divided on whether or not Tyrod Taylor is the answer to our Playoff Prayers. Despite leading a historic and unforgettable ending to the 20 year, much talked-about Playoff drought, it’s fair to say they won’t be parking a full sized bronze Tyrod statue next to Ralph’s outside the Cap any time soon. For those fans who believed and exclaimed IN ROD WE TRUST, his time in Buffalo ran out about as fast as he did when his first read wasn’t open. Once he put up one of the worst playoff performances ever down in Jacksonville, everyone knew he was on to his next stop.

For Tyrod Believers, however, there is hope! Longtime Left Tackle and permanent Loss Sufferer Joe Thomas, who knows something about subpar Qbs, (he blocked for like 20 different dudes) isn’t ready to give up on molding Tyrod’s skull into a permanent fixture. Thomas claims Rod, not 1st overall pick Baker Mayfield, might also take the Browns to the next level..

The polarity and debate over players like Tyrod, Sammy Watkins, and Marcel Dareus always provided us Bills’ fans with enough ammunition for a healthy, anger-filled October Wednesday water cooler debate.

It’s fair to say that it was indeed the perilous cries of both local media and fans’ criticism of Tyrod Taylor that directly led to the historic West Coast Massacre of Nathan Peterman’s career, (RIP) or at least led to the pressured decision forced on a young coach that led to it.

Regardless of your take on Tyrod, the fact is he led us to the PLAYOFFS. WE MADE IT. WE BROKE THE CURSE. The drought is over, but, is it? It’s almost as if Bills’ fans wish they still had the drought to talk about this offseason. It’s as if there’s something missing from the hearts of fans after making the playoffs for the first time in 20 years.

Bills’ fans seem to look at this offseason in the sort of way you look at a shitty ex. You know you’re better off, but you got so used to bitching, that you don’t even know what to say when someone asks how your doing.

The reality is the drought is over, and the franchise, as a whole, has eliminated some toxic cogs, and revitalized in true Rust Belt fashion.

Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott have proven they know how to build a successful football program. The decision by the Pegula’s to hand over all football decisions to the pair means they trust the young duo to sustain a winning culture over time. Russ Brandon, longtime steward and household name was finally relieved of his duties, even if he claims it was based on his own wishes. What did he even do?

Long gone is the mysterious, sly eye of Doug Whaley, as I imagine he’s off somewhere overseas, playing a villain in some Bollywood action blockbuster. So much has changed in the front office so quickly, it’s easy to forget that Rex and Rob Ryan ACTUALLY coached here, or at least took a few shits here.

Fans have already seen the overall culture, mindset, and product change, and you can feel the energy shifting collectively from long time, punch drunk loser to a desire-fueled competitor.

Two particular individuals that latched onto, and perhaps even helped institute and solidify the loser mentality have also been relieved of their duties, also coincidentally by “choice,” coinciding with the end of a losing era, yet not in the locker room or front office.

Former** Buffalo News reporters Jerry Sullivan and Bucky Gleason tortured Bills’ fans for YEARS with cyclical conditioning and hate-mongering. Gleason circa ‘92, Sullivan pushing 30 years himself. Decades of constant mental abuse handed down to innocent fans already ingesting a stale football franchise, their drab view of Buffalo sports became that of a warm, skunky, old Bud Light from that SuperBowl party in ’92.

No matter how positive or negative the season would or could go, these 2 consistently maintained a level of negativity marination that could heir on the side of propaganda. Sure, there were some bad Bills teams over the years, but look at our mediocrity versus the Dallas Cowboys, and compare the collective mindset of local media and fan belief.

It was as if they were compensated to stir up a toxic witches’ brew of what our franchise represented, sift out any sign of hope, and take that upside down shitcake to regurgitate to fans to spread like fertilizer, thus concocting a breeding culture of losing football games for a losing city with no future in sight. They may not be gone forever, but they’ve taken a patriarchal hit, and that’s a start. That’s a win.

I requested, received and accepted a buyout from TBN. I want to thank sports editors Howard Smith, Steve Jones, Lisa Wilson and Keith McShea for hiring me, believing in me and/or supporting me for the past 20 years. I also want to thank the readers for their passion.

I’ve accepted a buyout today after the News took away my column. They felt my voice was becoming bad for business. It’s been a privilege to cover Buffalo sports for 29 years. I wrote for the readers, who deserved a fair, objective and passionate perspective, even when it stung.

— Jerry Sullivan (@ByJerrySullivan) May 29, 2018

It doesn’t sting to know they’re both out. It feels like Jennifer Lopez knocking out her former abusive, ex-husband in the end of ENOUGH.

So here we are Bills’ fans. The city of Buffalo is thriving. The Playoff drought is over. The polarizing Tyrod, Marcel, & Sammy are all gone. Gleason & Sullivan’s negative takes are gone. Rob & Rex are gone, as are their gut’s. Russ & Doug, gone. What are we supposed to do now? Who are we supposed to complain about? Where does that leave us?
